Tsogo Sun Sandton Mile hosts a truly amazing race

Conven was challenged by Tsogo Sun, along with a select group of travel agents and other media personnel, to a day of detours, pit-stops and roadblocks. Weaving our way along the Tsogo Sun Sandton Mile, it comprised of four iconic Tsogo Sun destinations in Sandton:

  • Sandton Convention Centre
  • Sandton Sun
  • InterContinental Johannesburg Sandton Towers
  • Garden Court Sandton City.

Armed with nothing but a cryptic first clue and colour-coded ‘survival kits’, five teams consisting of seven members each, embarked on a race of epic proportions.

Conven was part of the Yellow Team and we started our Amazing Race experience by meeting and greeting each other at the Garden Court Sandton City. With no idea what to expect, we anxiously lined up to start the race.

The first clue took us to Riffs Bar and Grill, located inside the Garden Court hotel. There, we split up so that some of us could record the chorus to a well-known pop song, while the rest could pour a ‘perfect’ glass of beer and try to auction it off to the highest bidder.

From there we raced to the Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) where we had to properly set a table for a meal; it may sound easy but getting your salad forks and side plates right is more difficult than it seems. As soon as our SCC supervisor was satisfied with our work, we were on to the InterContinental, all the while deciphering the cryptic clues that lead to each destination. Once there, we had to complete a five-star check in, all the bells and whistles included. From there we raced to the Sandton Sun where we had to plate up an appetiser, make a bed– which had to meet impeccable Tsogo Sun standard of course- and power-walk Sandton City’s Diamond Walk.

‘We wanted to showcase the Tsogo Sun Sandton Mile properties and their offerings in terms of accommodation, food and beverage, and the conferencing facilities which are easily accessible from all three hotel properties. The guest list comprised many of our top clients in the conferencing and travel industries, a client base we value for the unrelenting work they do in collaboration with Tsogo Sun,’ says Adriaan Liebetrau, sales and marketing manager of the Tsogo Sun Sandton Mile.

Exhausted but elated, teams finished the race at the San Deck at the Sandton Sun before attending the prize-giving ceremony in the hotel’s Champagne Bar.

With teamwork, determination and drive, the Yellow Team cracked the clues, excelled at the tasks and managed to place first in the Tsogo Sandton Mile Amazing Race.
